 1903 finger groove stock Marks

I have a 1903 Mark 1 with a nice finger groove stock (not the one for Mark1,has no cutout) with what appears to be a small Eagles head, about 3/8" with y98 under it in very small letters on the left side of the Stock above the trigger. Stock has circle P behind trigger guard. Can anyone identify this mark? Thanks

Although I'm not 100% certain about this, I believe it is a WWI stock inspection mark. No sign of a three-letter group on the left side of the stock above the TG?

I believe Rick is correct. The only W.W.1 '03s I have observed that appeared original in every respect that were eagle head proofed were of 1918 manufacture and were made at S.A. I have not seen the eagle head proof on rifles of earlier or later manufacture. The exception to this would be the M1917 rifles of which all carried the eagle head proof regardless of manufacturer.

Other than the Y98 under the Eagle, no other marks. The stock is excellent, and the Mark1 is 1919 with a 1919 Barrel like new. Should I leave this stock on it?

The circled P is for proof marked. At the factory they loaded the rifle up with higher than normal pressure ammo (REAL HOT) and fired it several times. If the action survived then they flipped it over and stamped it just behind the trigger guard.

You are correct. The eagle head cartouche when applied to the 1903 rifle is a final inspection mark. The circle P is the firing proof.

Try ebay or Forrest Inc.He used to have M1 and M2 mags in stock but did not advertise them.
